The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Each time a major honors show nears, you'll find a clamor for introducing additional classifications to recognize unsung work and fill the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case supporting my request is the most urgent and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil in the world of gaming, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category in 2014
  • A different innovative game missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games count as the most-played games globally and have been for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge game development, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
