Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The site, located using surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in hills just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of access tunnels leading to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," he commented. "They were part of a great many British personnel deployed over the holidays. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
